In Forests is a series of paintings and artist’s books created in wildland forests using twig, brush, pencil, and pen. I work in forests whenever I can, for hours, days, or weeks at a time. I like to work seated on the ground using materials that I can carry most anywhere: ink, pencil, watercolor, and gouache on paper. When available, I paint with stream, lake, or sea water; I allow local fungi, soil, leaves, seaweed, sap, bark, and seeds to stain or embed themselves into my paintings. Each piece illuminates a wild species or particular habitat, sometimes with hand-lettered field notes or text about environmental concerns. The paintings are created in spontaneous response to whatever may be happening while I am outdoors. I invite traces of my forest experiences to remain: spatters, stains, and reverence.
